TVP is canceling the film adaptation of "The Doll." The station revealed the reason for its decision.

TVP is canceling the film adaptation of "The Doll." The station revealed the reason for its decision.

TVP announced that Telewizja Polska will not be co-producing either a series or a film based on Bolesław Prus's novel. The public broadcaster reported that Gigant Films, the producer of "The Doll," had withdrawn its offer to co-finance the film with Telewizja Polska's PLN 10 million.

Not one, but two adaptations of "The Doll" are currently in development. Netflix is producing a series based on Prus's novel. Gigant Films is working on a film adaptation, although initially a series was also planned. In early July , Radosław Drabik, head of Gigant Films, announced that TVP had withdrawn from co-producing the series. On July 22, the public broadcaster issued an announcement regarding the "Lalka" project.

"Telewizja Polska (Polish Television) wholeheartedly supports attempts to adapt classic Polish literature into the screen. However, with the streaming platform producing the series "The Doll" in parallel, duplicating costly projects is not justified – neither from the public interest perspective nor given the financial capabilities of the company, which is currently in liquidation," the statement said.

Moreover, neither a series nor a film based on Prus's novel will be made with the participation of TVP.

"Telewizja Polska (Polish Television) offered PLN 10 million to co-finance the film's production. However, Gigant Films, the producer of "The Doll," withdrew from the public broadcaster. TVP accepted this decision with understanding and respect for the creators' independence. From the outset of talks, the company demonstrated openness and commitment to the project's development, declaring significant financial support," the statement reads.

TVP expressed hope that "the next film »The Doll« will be a worthy adaptation of one of the most important works of Polish literature", and wishes Gigant Films "good luck in further work on the screen adaptation of Bolesław Prus' novel".

Who will star in the new "Lalka"?

In Gigant Films' adaptation of "The Doll," Marcin Dorociński will play Stanisław Wokulski, Kamila Urzędowska will play Izabela Łęcka, Marek Kondrat will play Ignacy Rzecki, Agata Kulesza will play Mrs. Meliton, and Andrzej Seweryn will play Tomasz Łęcki. The film is directed by Maciej Kawalski ("Dangerous Gentlemen") and the cinematographer is Piotr Sobociński Jr. ("Corpus Christi," "The Wedding," "Wołyń").
